Onsite App Alternative: How to Choose a Construction App That Fits Your Sites

If you are reading this, you probably already know about the Onsite app. It is a construction management app used by Indian contractors, and many teams run their sites with it. You may be happy with it, or you may be looking for another option. Either way, this article will not tell you which app to pick. It will tell you how to pick.

Here is the truth most app articles skip. The problem is rarely the app name. The problem is whether your site team will actually open the app every day and enter data. A munshi who will not mark hajiri in the morning will not do it in any app. A mistri who forgets to raise a material request will forget in every tool. So before you compare apps, compare your own site habits. The right app is the one your people will use without you standing behind them.

That said, once you know your team will record things, the choice of app does matter. Some apps are heavy. Some are simple. Some suit big builders, some suit interior firms running many small sites. Let us work through this properly.

Start from your own sites, not from a feature list

Most people compare apps by reading feature lists. That is the wrong starting point. Start from how your business actually runs. Here are three common situations.

A contractor with 2 sites and 40 labour

Your daily worry is hajiri and wages. If attendance is wrong even one day, the labour rate calculation goes wrong, and settlement at month end becomes a fight. You need labour attendance that is quick to mark, hard to fake, and connects to wages. Photo attendance with site location helps here, because you can see the worker was actually present at the site. You also need a simple way to handle contractor settlement, because part of your labour probably comes through a labour contractor. An app that links attendance to salary and settlement directly will save you days of Excel work every month.

An interior firm with 8 small sites

Your sites are flats and offices, often running at the same time, each with a small team. Your problems are different. Material reaches the wrong site. The client asks for updates and you have nothing to show. Your site engineers are juniors and they forget to send daily reports. For you, the important things are daily progress updates with photos, client updates you can send without typing long messages, and material tracking per site so a challan does not get mixed up between two flats in the same building. A big builder-focused tool may feel too heavy for this. A lighter app may fit better.

A builder with a store and several sites

You keep cement, steel, tiles and fittings in your own store, and issue them to sites as needed. For you, stock is the centre of everything. You need material requests from site, approval by you, an order to the vendor, receipt at site or store, and then issue to the site. If any step is missing, your stock register never matches the physical stock. You also care about site kharcha, machine and tool tracking, and a measurement book for contractor bills. Look for an app where material management and stock are built in properly, not bolted on.

Notice something. In all three cases, the starting point was the business, not the app. Write down your own three biggest daily problems first. Then compare apps against that paper.

A fair way to compare two apps in 14 days

Demo videos are easy. Sales calls are easy. Real sites are hard. The only honest way to compare two apps is to run both on the same site, in the same week, doing the same tasks. Here is a plan you can follow. It works whether one app is Onsite and the other is Trackovo, or any two apps you are considering.

  1. Pick one site, not all sites. Choose a site with an active munshi or engineer who will cooperate.
  2. Run both apps for the same week. Week one is not enough for month-end work, but it is enough for daily work.
  3. Do the same five tasks in both apps every day: mark attendance, raise a material request, receive material against a challan, record a payment or expense, and see the day’s report.
  4. Score each task from 1 to 5. Score honesty: did the entry happen the same day, or did you have to push?
  5. At the end of the week, sit with the site team and ask one question: which app would you use if I did not ask you?

Use this table to score. Print it or copy it into a sheet. One row per task, one column per app.

TaskWhat to look forApp AApp B
Mark attendanceTime taken, works on weak network, photo and location check, munshi can do it alone/5/5
Raise material requestFewer than ten taps, correct site selected, engineer does not need training/5/5
Receive materialChallan details entered once, quantity and rate checked, stock updated/5/5
Record payment or expenseParty name, mode, site tagged, visible in site kharcha the same day/5/5
See the day’s reportYou can see attendance, material and money in one place without calling anyone/5/5

One more thing. Ask both vendors for a written quote covering everything, including GST, extra users, and what happens after the trial. For any app, including Onsite, check the competitor’s own website or ask their sales team directly for current prices and plan limits. Do not rely on blog posts, including this one, for another app’s pricing.

Where Trackovo fits

Stop juggling WhatsApp groups, Excel sheets, and paper registers

Trackovo runs every part of your construction site in one app — materials, attendance, finance, vendor payments. 14-day free trial. No card needed.

Trackovo is one app, on Android and web, built in India for Indian sites. It covers material requests, approvals, orders, receipts and stock; labour attendance with photo and site location; labour wages and contractor settlement; site-wise payments and expenses; vendors; tasks and daily progress; a measurement book; machines and tools; and client updates. Every module is in every plan, so you are not forced to buy a higher plan just to get the measurement book or the store module.

If the three scenarios earlier sounded like your business, here is how they map:

  • The contractor with 2 sites: attendance with photo and location feeds into wages and settlement, so month-end work is less painful. See how labour management works in practice.
  • The interior firm: daily progress and client updates are built in, so a junior engineer recording the day also produces what the client sees.
  • The builder with a store: request, approve, order, receive, issue and stock are all connected, so the stock register has a chance of matching reality.

On price, briefly: Starter is Rs 5,998 per month plus GST for 3 core users and 5 active projects. Growth is Rs 9,998 per month for 6 core users and 12 active projects. Scale is Rs 17,998 per month for 12 core users and 30 active projects. There is a 14-day free trial and no card is needed to start. Full details are on the plans page, and you can start a free trial or request a WhatsApp demo if you prefer to talk first.

If you are currently running sites on Excel sheets, we also keep a set of construction Excel templates free to use, including a labour attendance sheet format, if you want to first fix your paper process before moving to an app.

Where Trackovo may not fit

No app fits everyone, and pretending otherwise wastes your time. Be clear about these limits before you trial Trackovo:

  • No Tally integration. If your accounts team needs entries to flow into Tally automatically, Trackovo will not do that today. Your accountant would enter the figures in Tally separately.
  • No construction CRM. Trackovo manages your sites, not your sales leads. If you need lead tracking, site visits for new clients and quotations in one pipeline, you will need a separate CRM tool.
  • No biometric hardware. Attendance is marked in the app with photo and site location. If your policy requires a fingerprint machine at the gate, Trackovo does not sell or support that hardware.

If any of these three is a hard requirement, rule Trackovo out early and save your trial time. That is a fair outcome. The 14-day test in the earlier section only works if both apps can actually do your five daily tasks.

Common questions

Is it wrong to switch from Onsite to another app?

No. Onsite is a construction management app used by many Indian contractors, and it works well for plenty of teams. Switching is a business decision, not a loyalty test. The honest approach is the one in this article: run both apps on the same site for a week, score the five daily tasks, and let your site team’s behaviour decide. Sometimes the result will be that your current app is fine and the real problem is data discipline. That is a useful answer too.

How do I get my site team to actually enter data every day?

Three things help. First, keep the number of daily entries small; five tasks is enough. Second, make one person accountable per site, usually the munshi or site engineer, and check the day’s report yourself every evening so they know it is seen. Third, pick an app that works on weak network, because sites always have weak network. If an app works offline or syncs later, entries happen. If it hangs, entries stop within a week.

What should I check about pricing before paying for any construction app?

Ask for a written quote that states the monthly or yearly price, GST, what a “user” means, limits on projects or sites, and what costs extra. For Onsite or any other app, check the competitor’s own website or ask their sales team directly, because prices change and third-party articles go stale. Also ask what happens to your data if you stop paying, and whether you can export your material and attendance history. A vendor who answers these in writing is easier to trust.

Can I keep using Excel for a while instead of any app?

Yes, and it is a reasonable stage for a very small operation. If you do, fix the format first so data stays comparable week to week. Our free construction Excel templates give you a starting point. The honest limitation is this: sheets do not stop fake attendance, do not capture photos and location, and do not stop a challan being entered twice. When those losses start costing more than a subscription, that is the time to move to an app.
